Latest News - 10 June 2020: Coronavirus: Essex Highways Status

We are now working with other councils in Essex to implement on-street measures designed to make city/town centre public spaces safer for people during the Covid-19 crisis. Called ‘Safer, Greener, Healthier’, the interim schemes aim to provide bigger, safer spaces in key locations for city centre shoppers, residents, workers and visitors to social distance in.  For more information please see our Safer, Greener, Healthier pages.

Essex Highways has continued to work through the current coronavirus emergency period to keep Essex roads safe and serviceable for essential travel, as our dedicated workforce has continued with key inspections and repairs throughout the period. We have also continued to offer permits to utility companies who need to conduct their own essential repairs and we have continued to monitor traffic conditions.

In the background, our planning and engineering teams have been working to adapt the existing plans we had in place for our programme of seasonal road maintenance including resurfacing, surface dressing and other highway improvement projects.  As part of this, we have incorporated the still essential social distancing and other Health and Safety requirements to protect public and workforce health.

Please continue to report road defects online, but please try to avoid calling us unless you spot an urgent road safety situation.

For updates relating to roads and travel other Essex County Council service please visit or follow us on social media.

Thank you for your continuing co-operation as you avoid making non-essential journeys.
