The Army and Navy Sustainable Transport Package is an unmissable opportunity to re-design the Army and Navy junction - a crucial gateway to Chelmsford – while also providing better options for people to travel and encouraging safer, greener, and healthier ways of getting around the city. This page provides all the latest information and updates as the project progresses.

In 2022 planning permission was granted by Chelmsford City Council (ref: 22/00473/REM) for a new railway station to be built on the Great Eastern Main Line.

It is anticipated that the new station will improve transport links in the area, reducing car journeys into the city and improving facilities for rail users.

As part of the planning permissions for the extension of Broomfield Hospital Mid Essex Hospitals Trust were obliged to make improvements to the roundabout at the junction of B1008 Main Road and Hospital Approach to improve capacity. All approaches will be widened to two lanes with a revised and relocated central island.

This scheme focuses on improvements to the section of cycleway along Bunny Walks between Victoria Road and Hillview Road, a route approximately 570m in length. The improvements to this route will specifically focus on ride quality and safety.

Chelmsford's Future Transport Network - A zonal approach to transport improvements in Chelmsford.

The existing A130 between the Boreham Interchange and the A131 was originally built in the 1980s. It needs to be fit for purpose, particularly as Chelmsford continues to grow, catering for increased walking, cycling and public transport.

Repairs and strengthening works to Duffill Bridge have been planned to take place during March 2024.  During this time, staff will be mostly working underneath the structure.

We are currently considering measures to improve the crossing point at Paper Mill Bridge, North Hill, Little Baddow as the bridge has limited structural capacity and is in an deteriorating condition.

Chelmsford City Council and Essex County Council are working together to deliver a new public square, at the top of the High Street outside Shire Hall.

A number of improvements were made to Victoria Road during 2023, including waterproofing Victoria Road Bridge, resurfacing the road between the junction of Springfield Road and New Street, and upgrading pedestrian/cycling crossing facilities.
