Essex Highways is proposing to replace the existing bridge in Roxwell with a new structure that will be the first Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) deck bridge in Essex.
This will be the first vehicle bridge in Essex to feature an FRP deck. The works are scheduled to commence on 12 October and is expected to take approximately 16 weeks to complete, excluding a planned two-week break over the December holiday period. The advanced FRP technology is a lightweight but exceptionally strong material that offers significant benefits over traditional steel construction. Manufactured in Poland and imported specifically for this scheme, the FRP deck provides a durable, corrosion-resistant solution that is designed to last longer and require less maintenance throughout its lifespan.
By investing in this innovative technology, the scheme will deliver a more resilient crossing while reducing future maintenance costs and minimising disruption associated with ongoing repairs.
To enable the works to be carried out safely, both the pedestrian and vehicle bridges will be closed throughout the construction period. While the vehicle bridge is used primarily by local agricultural traffic, Essex Highways recognises the importance of the route to the local community, particularly given its proximity to the nearby primary school.
Every effort will be made to minimise disruption during the works. Safe pedestrian routes will be maintained where possible and temporary parking arrangements will be provided nearby to assist parents, while diversion routes will be available for buses and emergency vehicles.
Information regarding traffic management measures will be communicated in due course. We appreciate that these works will cause some temporary inconvenience and thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience while this important infrastructure improvement is delivered.
