Clearing snow and ice yourself

Contrary to popular belief, there is no law stopping you from clearing your local pavements and pathways, providing you take a careful and common sense approach. The government publishes guidance on how to clear snow from a road, pathway or cycleway yourself. We have also produced a 'helpful tips' leaflet.  The Met Office publishes The Snow Code.  You could also check the guidance on the Health and Safety Executive website.

Where to get salt

The salt/sand mix in our yellow salt bins and the salt bags provided for those signing up to the Salt Bag Partnership Scheme is to be used on the public highway only. If you wish to salt your driveway or private land, salt can be purchased from local building suppliers and DIY stores. Or, as an alternative, you can use table salt or dishwasher salt.
