Temporary restrictions in place on New London Road
Temporary traffic lights are place to protect London Road Bridge

Current status

As a measure to protect London Road Bridge, located behind Marks and Spencer store on New London Road in Chelmsford, two-way traffic lights were installed on 24 June 2025 to reduce loading on a defective cast iron beam beneath the bus lane.

Essex Highways are currently designing and assessing the feasibility of repair options. As the structure is Grade II listed, any proposed repair will require Listed Building Consent before works can proceed. The traffic lights will help manage the traffic and protect the structure while this is being undertaken.

To keep traffic flowing as effectively as possible, priority has been given to vehicles travelling on New London Road, from Parkway and Bellmead.

The Park and Ride bus stop located on New London Road (fronting Grosvenor House, and opposite Job Centre) has been temporarily suspended.

Use of the river and pedestrian access over the structure remains unaffected.

The restrictions will be removed once the necessary approvals have been obtained and the repairs completed, however no timescales can be provided at this time.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the safe and continued use of the bridge.
