About the scheme

Sections of the A129 High Street and Eastwood Road in Rayleigh have received carriageway surface improvements during Autumn 2023, with final phase of works being completed on 23 November 2023.

As a traffic sensitive location, the work was carried out overnight with the support of temporary road closures operational between the hours of 8pm and 5am. 

Restrictions were removed during the daytime so that normal traffic flows could resume, to reduce inconvenience as much as reasonably practicable.

Road closures for these works were necessary as machine surfacing requires planing off the existing carriageway layer and removing the material from site. The planed area had manholes and gullies adjusted and replaced asrequired. A bitumen spray coat was then be applied and the new surfacing laid. The surfacing consisted of either one or two separate layers, dependent on the shape and condition of the underlying road structure. This surfacing was a more substantial, deeper new surface than some other treatments.
