About the scheme
Essex County Council has secured £7.3 million to undertake a series of improvements to the A131 (Braintree Road) and A130 (Essex Regiment Way) which is a key strategic route linking Braintree in the north of the county to Chelmsford. £3.6 million of the funding is being provided by the Government's Local Growth fund via the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.
The plans support future economic growth of the area, while implementing casualty reduction and safety measures. Roundabout and bus lane improvements are designed to enhance network capacity as well as extend the existing bus lane routes to support public transport including Park and Ride.
The work will be undertaken in phases over a period of approximately 3 years. Dates provided may be subject to change as the project develops.
Proposed Sheepcotes Roundabout improvements
To provide a dedicated left turn slip from Braintree Road (A131) to Essex Regiment Way (A130).
Reduce the size of the central roundabout island to allow two circulatory traffic lanes from Essex Regiment Way (A130) to Braintree Road (A131).
Widen the roundabout approach on Essex Regiment Way (A130) to two lanes.
Essex Regiment Way bus lane extension (works complete)
- Extend the existing bus lane provision from Pratts Farm roundabout (location of Chelmer Valley Park and Ride) to Nabbotts Farm Roundabout.

When will the work take place on Sheepcotes Roundabout?
Works started Monday 23 September 2019 to improve Sheepcotes Roundabout. Please refer to the traffic management arrangements below.
The construction period is anticipated to complete spring 2020. Please note that programmed dates are approximate and may be subject to change if the work is affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise.
How will this affect you?
Overnight construction is ongoing with the support of temporary traffic lights. Please be aware that adjustments may be made to the traffic management as the scheme progresses.
Two full overnight road closures are required on 22 and 23 February 2020 for road reconstruction and resurfacing works at the roundabout.
We would encourage all road users to plan journeys, allowing extra time during the construction period and take extra care when passing through the area as traffic management will be altered according to the activities being carried out.
While efforts will be made to keep traffic congestion to a minimum throughout the works it is recognised that this is a traffic sensitive area and there is likely to be some disruption to normal traffic flows.
Provisions have been made for agreed bus services to be escorted through the works. On Saturday 22 February, a southbound bus will be escorted through the closure at 10.22pm. A northbound bus will be escorted through at 11.02pm to maintain a Chelmsford-Braintree-Halstead service.
On Sunday night, 23 February, a northbound bus will be escorted through at 9.05pm and a southbound at 9.10pm. Again, this is to maintain a Chelmsford-Braintree-Halstead service.
The 40 Broomfield bus service serving the Channels Estate and the Chelmer Village Park and Ride service will operate as usual.
The Chelmer Valley Park and Ride site is situated south of the closed section of Essex Regiment Way, and therefore access to/from the car park will not be affected by the temporary closure. We would, however, remind motorists to take additional care when leaving the car park and follow appropriate diversions if your usual route takes you via Essex Regiment Way (southbound).
A plan of the route improvements is available in the document section below.
We aim to keep residents informed of progress by providing updates to this webpage including details regarding traffic arrangements such as temporary closures, displaying local signage and updating our twitter feed @essexhighways.
