Development north of Wood End Farm, Hatfield Road, Witham - new roundabout

General arrangement drawing of proposed new roundabout
About the scheme
As part of the planning application granted by Braintree District Council for the Land North of Wood End Farm, Hatfield Road, Witham (applications 19/01896/OUT and 23/00737/REM), a new five-armed roundabout will replace the oval-shaped island feature on Hatfield Road, Witham. This is located outside the petrol station just after Junction 21’s northbound exit slip off the A12.
The scheme is designed to improve local infrastructure and provide access to a new housing development off the northern arm of the proposed roundabout being delivered by Countryside Properties/Vistry Group.
The developer is responsible for the works, and have appointed Breheny Civil Engineering Ltd to carry out construction activities on their behalf.
How it will affect you
Countryside Properties/Vistry Group are currently securing the necessary legal permissions and finalising plans for the works. Subject to these arrangements being completed, we anticipate that on-site construction will begin in Spring 2026.
The works will be delivered in phases, with traffic management adjusted to reflect the activities taking place.
It is expected that much of the construction will require two‑way temporary traffic lights during the formation of the new roundabout.
The scheme will require close coordination with National Highways (who are responsible for and manage traffic flows on the A12) to ensure the route continues to operates safely and efficiently. This may include implementing one‑way restrictions where necessary.
A small number of temporary road closures will also be required overnight and/or at weekends to allow certain activities to be carried out. These details will be communicated in advance.
A temporary speed limit of 40mph is anticipated for the duration of the works.
