About the scheme

Armitage Bridge is located to the north of Thaxted and carries the B184 Walden Road over the River Chelmer.

The bridge is a single span structure made up of two sections. The original section is a masonry arch bridge with an unknown date of construction, while the second section is a composite steel beam and concrete infill deck, constructed as a widening of the existing arch structure. The widened part of the bridge dates back to circa 1942.

During 2022 Armitage Bridge was replaced as the previous bridge was in a weakened condition and needed to be replaced.  We carried out works to remove and replace the bridge with a structure made up of precast reinforced concrete boxes.

The new structure has been designed with a mammal ledge, as recommended by our ecologists. This ledge will allow animals such as otters, and other wildlife to pass under the bridge safely, supporting biodiversity in the area.

Main construction and landscaping works has been completed.
