The current position

Boxted Bridge (ECC No. 0059) was built in 1903 and is located on Wick Road/Lower Farm Road near the junction of Sky Hall Hill in Boxted on the Essex/Suffolk border where it crosses the River Stour.

Essex Highways are in the process of considering long-term options for the management of the crossing point, and well as identifying possible improvements to resolve the existing road alignment and visibility constraints at the junction.

Our works

Preparations are now being made to carry out ground investigations works at Boxted Bridge during November.  This will involve a full closure of the bridge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while the works take place as deep excavations will be required in the carriageway to support the works.

These works are due to start on Monday 2 November 2020 and are anticipated to take approximately three weeks to complete, subject to weather being suitable and no unexpected issues arising.

Access will be maintained through our works for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.

Nearby properties will be accessible from either side of the road closure however no vehicles will be permitted over the bridge during our works..A signed diversion will be in place during the road closure via Church Road, Burnt Dick Hill, Park Road, Horkesley Hill, Nayland Bypass, Bear Street, Birch Street, Stoke Road, Nayland Road, Church Street, School Street, The Downs, Park Street and vice versa.
