Boxted Bridge – latest news

Load testing has already been carried out on Boxted Bridge. It found the bridge can safely be reopened to cyclists and pedestrians, this is because currently we hold no evidence of the bridge being able to reopen / not reopen to vehicles until the load carrying assessment is completed. The load testing did not prove that it must remain closed to vehicles, only that it is safe to reopen as it is currently.

This will allow us to keep people safe while maintaining the existing structure. The safety of roads and structures in Essex is our highest priority and Boxted Bridge is not an exception.

The load testing carried out provided enough information for a model to be created that represents the behaviour of the bridge. An assessment of the bridge using this model will be undertaken to check the capacity of the bridge to carry highway loading in accordance with current National Standards.
