About the scheme
During autumn 2025, Essex Highways will carry out road surface improvements on a section of Brentwood High Street. The project is being carefully coordinated with Cadent Gas, who will be upgrading gas mains along the same route. By aligning both sets of works, we aim to reduce disruption and deliver improvements more efficiently.
Essex Highways will remove the existing granite setts from the carriageway between Crown Street and St Thomas Road, replacing the surface with asphalt. This decision, made in consultation with Brentwood Council, will result in a smoother and safer road surface for all users.
Our resurfacing programme will follow Cadent’s infrastructure upgrades, making use of their planned road closures. This approach helps minimise future inconvenience for local businesses, residents, and visitors.
Please note: Cadent will repair any areas affected by their gas pipe replacement works that fall outside Essex Highways’ resurfacing scope, including footways.
How it may affect you
Cadent will commence works to upgrade their gas pipes on Brentwood High Street from 15 September 2025, with the project expected to last approximately six weeks. To support these activities, temporary road and lane closures will be necessary as indicated on the above map.
These works will be delivered in phases, allowing Essex Highways to follow closely behind Cadent with resurfacing operations. This coordinated approach makes use of existing traffic restrictions, helping to minimise disruption for residents, businesses and shoppers.
Essex Highways is scheduled to begin resurfacing on 22 September 2025, which will continue for approximately four weeks. The improvements will focus on the granite sett section of the carriageway between Crown Street and St Thomas Road, replacing the surface with asphalt to enhance safety and providing a smoother surface. Due to the nature of our work, no vehicles will be permitted to pass through the road closure during resurfacing operations (indicated in red on the map above).
Please be aware that our activities are likely to generate noise from machinery and resurfacing equipment. Some disruption will be unavoidable during the improvement works, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Please note that the schedule may change if affected by poor weather or if unforeseen circumstances arise.
