Advance Notice - 26 September 2019: Marks Tey Station Bridge - proposed weekend overnight closures during November 2019

  • Fully closed from 1.30am to 7.00am Sunday 17 November 2019 for vegetation clearance work
  • Fully closed from 1.30am to 7.00am Sunday 24 November 2019 for construction of temporary fence foundation.
  • Fully closed from 1.30am to 7.00am Sunday 1 December 2019 for installation of temporary fence.

Proposed diversion route during temporary closure of North Lane

About the scheme

Marks Tey Station Bridge is located to the east of Marks Tey Station and carries North Lane over the railway line.  The bridge is owned and maintained by Network Rail.

We propose to install safety barriers, known as a vehicle restraint system (VRS), to all four points of the bridge.  The purpose of this system is to reduce the likelihood of a vehicle leaving the carriageway at the bridge/embankment.

We currently anticipate this installation will take approximately three months to complete with the support of a full road closure, subject to weather being suitable and no unexpected issues arising.

Negotiations are in their final stages to enable us to gain permissions from Network Rail to allow us to carry out the works.

Preliminary works - Proposed weekend (overnight) North Lane road closures during November 2019

In advance of the main installation works, some temporary fencing needs to be installed to create a safe working area.  Arrangements are being made to carry out these preliminary works during November 2019 and will require a series of overnight closures on North Lane at the bridge as follows:

  • Fully closed from 1.30am to 7.00am Sunday 17 November 2019 for vegetation clearance works.
  • Fully closed from 1.30am to 7.00am Sunday 24 November 2019 for construction of temporary fence foundation.
  • Fully closed from 1.30am to 7.00am Sunday 1 December 2019 for installation of temporary fence.

Advance warning notices and diversions will be in place during the works via North Lane, Brook Road, New Road, A1124 Halstead Road, A1124 Essex Yeomanry Way, B1408 London Road, A120 Marks Tey Interchange, Station Road and vice versa.

We urge all drivers to observe traffic management and signage in place during closures and would ask drivers to take additional care and drive cautiously through the area.  In particular, please be aware that vehicles, including long vehicles travelling to and from businesses located on North Lane (north of Marks Tey Station Bridge), will have no alternative but to follow the diversion route during closures.

Pedestrian access over Marks Tey Station Bridge will be maintained, or an alternative arrangement will be in place.  Details will be provided as arrangements are confirmed.

Please be aware that dates may be subject to change if works are affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise.  The works are also dependent on the necessary permissions being obtained from Network Rail.

Main works – installation of safety barriers

We are in the final stages of discussions with Network Rail in relation to the installation of the safety barrier system with a view to scheduling these works during the 2019/20 financial year.

Our preparations continue to be made for these works which will require a full closure of the road at Marks Tey Station Bridge on North Lane.  We are currently working towards a proposed date of Monday 6 January 2020 to avoid any closures of North Lane during the Christmas period.

We appreciate that these works may cause temporary noise and inconvenience to local residents, businesses and commuters for which we would like to apologise.

Pedestrian access over Marks Tey Station Bridge will be maintained during both day and night time work or an alternative arrangement will be in place.

Further details will be provided as arrangements are confirmed.

Further information

Please note arrangements can sometimes be subject to change at short notice due to unsuitable weather conditions or if unexpected issues arise.  The latest information will be reflected on site signage and this webpage.  Local residents, businesses and the parish council will be kept informed as details become available.

Works are subject to the necessary approvals being granted by Network Rail.
