Marks Tey Station Bridge Vehicle Restraint System (VRS), North Lane, Marks Tey

Latest News - 20 April 2020: Marks Tey Station Bridge - North Lane temporarily re-opened

Following the decision to temporarily stop works due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the first phase of foundation work has been completed, excavations have been filled and the road resurfaced. North Lane is currently open to traffic whilst works are postponed.

The decision as to when the works can restart is being reviewed and will be dependent on when current restrictions are lifted, availability of resources and when utility companies attending site to carry out the necessary diversion work.

We will update this webpage when more information is available as to when it is safe to resume work.

Works Location

Proposed diversion route during temporary closure of North Lane

About the scheme

Marks Tey Station Bridge is located to the east of Marks Tey Station and carries North Lane over the railway line.  The bridge is owned and maintained by Network Rail.

We propose to install safety barriers, known as a vehicle restraint system (VRS), to all four points of the bridge.  The purpose of this system is to reduce the likelihood of a vehicle leaving the carriageway at the bridge/embankment.

The works

Preparations have been made to begin the installation of safety barriers at Marks Tey Station Bridge from Monday 13 January 2020.  This will require a full closure of the bridge on North Lane while these works take place.

Advance warning notices will be in place and a signed vehicle diversion during the road closure.  We urge all drivers to observe the traffic management and signage in place during the works and take additional care and drive cautiously through the area.  In particular, please be aware that vehicles, including long vehicles travelling to and from businesses located on North Lane (north of Marks Tey Station Bridge), will have no alternative but to follow the diversion route during closures.

During the road closure a signed vehicle diversion will be in place via North Lane, Brook Road, New Road, A1124 Halstead Road, A1124 Essex Yeomanry Way, B1408 London Road, A120 Marks Tey Interchange, Station Road and vice versa.

A walkway will be provided for pedestrians to safely cross the bridge during the works.

The works are anticipated for completion in July 2020.  Please note that arrangements can sometimes be subject to change at short notice during unsuitable weather conditions or if unexpected issues arise.

Clearway/No parking restriction – North Lane

A temporary clearway/no parking restriction will be introduced on North Lane from the Station Bridge to Marks Tey Bridge that crosses Roman River to support the installation of the VRS system. This restriction is in place to ensure access to the site is maintained at all times as well as providing sufficient space for vehicles to turn around.

Warning notices will clearly identify the sections of road and periods when parking enforcement is effective.  No parking cones and signage will be in place so please refrain from parking vehicles in these areas when the Clearway/No Parking is in operation.

We regret any inconvenience caused however it is essential we enforce a Clearway to ensure the road remains clear without obstructions.

Further information

Please note arrangements can sometimes be subject to change at short notice due to unsuitable weather conditions or if unexpected issues arise.  The latest information will be reflected on site signage and this webpage.  Local residents, businesses and the parish council will be kept informed as details become available.

Works are subject to the necessary approvals being in place with Network Rail.
