About the scheme

Arrangements are in place to carry out machine surfacing improvements on the A13 between Pitsea flyover and the Five Bells Roundabout. These works will take place on the westbound carriageway during May 2026.

A full road closure will be required overnight because machine surfacing involves removing the existing surface course, treating concrete joints and the underlying structure before relaying a new surface.

This treatment is designed to provide a long-lasting performance on heavily trafficked routes. It follows a programme of improvements completed on the eastbound carriageway in 2024.

What is involved and how it may affect you

Works are due to start on 5 May 2026 and continue to the end of the month over 14 nights. There are no planned works taking place at the weekends or the following dates: Monday 18 May and Monday 25 May 2026.

As a traffic sensitive location, the work will take place overnight with the support of temporary road closures operational between 9pm and 5am. Traffic restrictions will be adjusted according to activities taking place however no through access will be available at any time during the closures.

All restrictions will be removed during the day time so that normal traffic can resume, helping to minimise disruption as far as reasonably practicable.

Drivers are advised to take extra care when travelling in the area and allow additional time for journeys, as diversions will be in place during the overnight closures.

Please be aware that surfacing works are weather‑dependent, and dates may change at short notice. Any updates will be shown on site signage and reflected on this webpage.

Bus operators have been informed of the planned works so they can make any necessary adjustments to their services.
