Marks Tey Bridge, North Lane, Marks Tey

Progress Update - 18 December 2018: Marks Tey Bridge

Following the recent vegetation clearance and site set up, visible progress has been made on phase one of the works.   A temporary footpath for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists has been put in place supported by a temporary crossing point over Roman River.  This will be open for use from 2 January 2019 when work recommences for the second phase.

Excavations have also started for drainage pipes to be installed which will support the temporary diversion of the waterway during the main construction period.

Works continue on site with the team planning to reopen North Lane at the bridge during the day on Friday 21 December for the Christmas period.  The weight limit will remain in place for HGVs until Wednesday 2nd January 2019 so diversion signs will stay in place.  The construction site and diversion signs will be periodically checked throughout the Christmas period.

The site team will resume the full road closure from Wednesday 2 January 2019 when we will commence works to remove the existing bridge and install the new structure.  The road closure will be necessary 24 hours a day until the works are complete.

Works Location

About the scheme

Marks Tey Bridge is located to the north of Marks Tey town and carries North Lane over Roman River linking Aldham to Marks Tey.

The bridge currently has a 3 tonne weight limit with all HGV’s diverted through an alternative route. In addition to the weight limit, the bridge has been struck a number of times causing damage to the structure.

Plans have now been made to replace the bridge with a wider structure. The main construction of the bridge will be precast concrete box culverts that will be brought to site and lifted into place, bringing benefits of a shorter construction programme when compared to other methods.

Following reconstruction of the bridge, the intention is to lift the weight restriction, subject to the consultation process.

The works

Bridge replacement works are due to commence from 19 November 2018 and are expected to take approximately 4 months to complete, dependant on weather.

What is involved and how may it affect you

It will be necessary for North Lane to be fully closed to vehicles during the works from a point approximately 990m south of its junction with Rectory Road for a distance of approximately 75m in a southerly direction.

The diversion route for the diverted traffic will be via North Lane, Station Road, A120, Colne Road, Coggeshall Road, Upper Holt Road, Lower Holt Street, Colneford Hill, Colchester Road, Tyburn Hill, Colchester Road, Halstead Road, Ford Street, New Road, Green Lane, Brook Road and vice versa.

A temporary footway will be installed to allow pedestrians during the bridge reconstructions works.

Programmed dates may change if works are hindered by adverse weather and or other unexpected issues.
