Marks Tey Bridge, North Lane, Marks Tey

Advance Notice - 30 October 2018: Update on forthcoming works

The anticipated start date for the bridge works has been revised to Monday 19 November 2018.

The first phase of works will involve vegetation clearance, the installation of the temporary footway and the diversion of utility services in the carriageway.  This work will be carried out during November and December 2018 under a temporary road closure.

We plan to reopen to road over Christmas before closing early in the New Year for the second phase of works to begin which will involve the removal and replacement of the current structure under a road closure.

Advance warning signs will be placed on site and diversions in place during road closures.

We will continue to post updates on this webpage, including changes to traffic management as more information becomes available as the scheme progresses.

We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience during the works.

Works Location

About the scheme

Marks Tey Bridge is located to the north of Marks Tey town and carries North Lane over Roman River linking Aldham to Marks Tey.

The bridge currently has a 3 tonne weight limit with all HGV’s diverted through an alternative route. In addition to the weight limit, the bridge has been struck a number of times causing damage to the structure.

Plans have now been made to replace the bridge with a wider structure. The main construction of the bridge will be precast concrete box culverts that will be brought to site and lifted into place, bringing benefits of a shorter construction programme when compared to other methods.

Following reconstruction of the bridge, the intention is to lift the weight restriction, subject to the consultation process.

The works

Bridge replacement works are due to commence from 19 November 2018 and are expected to take approximately 4 months to complete, dependant on weather.

What is involved and how may it affect you

It will be necessary for North Lane to be fully closed to vehicles during the works from a point approximately 990m south of its junction with Rectory Road for a distance of approximately 75m in a southerly direction.

The diversion route for the diverted traffic will be via North Lane, Station Road, A120, Colne Road, Coggeshall Road, Upper Holt Road, Lower Holt Street, Colneford Hill, Colchester Road, Tyburn Hill, Colchester Road, Halstead Road, Ford Street, New Road, Green Lane, Brook Road and vice versa.

A temporary footway will be installed to allow pedestrians during the bridge reconstructions works.

Programmed dates may change if works are hindered by adverse weather and or other unexpected issues.
