Wivenhoe Cycle Route

The cycle-way was opened to the public from 8th April and the scheme was finalised on 15th April with the B1028 Colchester Road reopened to the public and vehicles.

Elmstead Road has also been re-instated as a two way road and bus operators have now reverted back to their normal schedule.

An opening ceremony was held by the University on the 20th April 2016 to officially open the cycleway.

The scheme

  • The cycle link is approximately 800 m in length running along the western side of Colchester Road
  • It is a shared unsegregated cycle and footway

  • Due to the lack of width in the existing footway and carriage way the road has been widened and realigned to accommodate the new route
  • Drainage has been upgraded to ensure the route does not suffer with flooding
  • A Toucan crossing has been installed near The Flag pub to enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road in safety
