Walking and cycling boost as Colne Causeway crossing point upgrade completed

Work to increase safety for pedestrians and people who cycle at a busy Colchester crossing point has been completed, ahead of time and under budget.

A key link from the University, the Colne Causeway crossing connects those travelling from Elmstead Road towards the City Centre.

Part of a wider project to support walking and cycling between Colchester City Centre, the University of Essex and Greenstead, the upgrade has seen the pavement widened to make it more accessible.

The staggered crossing point has also been replaced with a single straight-across toucan crossing, meaning walkers and those who can cycle can cross both lanes of traffic safely in one go.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport at Essex County Council, said: “As Colchester continues to develop as a thriving city, we are working hard to make it easier and more accessible to walk or cycle into and from the city centre.

“This upgrade is the first part of a wider scheme which will see new walking and cycling segregated paths along East Hill and improvements to the existing facilities through the Moors, ultimately creating an easy-to-use route into the city centre from the east.

Councillor David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: "We have lots to do yet but it is great news to reach this new milestone as a further step towards safer and easier walking and cycling between Colchester City Centre, the University of Essex and Greenstead. All part of wider regeneration works, this will give our residents a healthy travel option into our city centre."

Further detail on the wider scheme can be seen at Colchester walking and cycling.
