Vital road improvement schemes backed as Chelmsford Garden Community develops

Major road improvement schemes are supporting one of the most significant housing developments in the UK.

Essex county councillors have approved the Beaulieu Access Package. This will upgrade the A12 and Beaulieu Park Station roundabout.

The 'infrastructure first' approach will support the growth of the Chelmsford Garden Community. This is creating 10,000 new homes in north east Chelmsford, along with new:

• business spaces
• schools
• open spaces
• community facilities
• health facilities

The Beaulieu Access Package will bring essential capacity and safety enhancements. It comes after the government cancelled its scheme to widen the A12.

The £38 million Beaulieu Access Package will be partly financed by the county council. The majority of funding will come from:

• Homes England
• National Highways
• developer contributions

The county council is also continuing to deliver the first section of the Chelmsford North East Bypass. Construction is due to complete at the end of the summer.

The bypass will further support connectivity for the garden community. It comes after the county council secured £250 million in funding to build both the bypass and the new Beaulieu Park Station.
