St Botolph's Circus Regeneration update 28/8/26

Scheme update

Following the introduction of the temporary pedestrian crossing, the subways at St Botolph’s are now closed.

The focus of recent works has been around the traffic islands, particularly the Magdalen Street island, where the team is identifying and surveying a number of underground services.

Works have also started within the subways, and over the coming days the team will be surveying of the subway lighting to enable its safe removal. The team will also begin carefully removing artwork from the subway walls.

St Botolph's Circus – Reduction to One Lane

Unfortunately, due to a number of drivers choosing to ignore the temporary pedestrian crossing, we have taken the decision to reduce Southway to a single lane approaching the junction and continuing across the roundabout into Magdalen Street.

The safety of pedestrians and all road users is our highest priority. We are working with the contractor, traffic management team and Essex Police to explore longer-term solutions while the works continue.
