Over 74,000 drains cleared to help avoid flood risk ahead of autumn and winter months

A total of 74,728 drains have been cleared across the county between April and August as Essex Highways prepares for wetter autumn and winter weather.

This is a 20% increase compared to the same period last year.

Essex Highways routinely clears blocked drains to prevent flooding, which can pose inconvenience and risk to road users and pedestrians.

Essex Highways will be running four jetting units across the county to carry out works on a weekly basis over the coming months. These works will include:

high-pressure washing
investigative works such as CCTV surveys
council member enquiries
emergency works.

Crews also attend resurfacing sites to make sure drains are cleaned and to identify any issues so they can be resolved prior to surfacing works taking place.

Councillor Mark Webster, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure said: "Blocked drains can quickly become a problem during periods of heavy rainfall, causing disruption for residents and road users.

“That's why our teams have been working hard throughout the spring and summer months to clear thousands of drains and identify issues before winter arrives.

“This preventative work is essential in helping us manage flooding risks and keep people travelling safely across Essex."
