Some defects that currently do not have a fixed timeframe for repair will now be fixed within 90 days
Essex County Council will commit to repair certain road defects within 90 days of them being reported to improve road safety for residents and road users.
The pledge contributes to the council’s 100 Day Plan for reforming Essex. It was agreed as part of the council’s revised Highways Maintenance and Inspections Strategies at its cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 16 September.
Under the new system, these types of repairs will be classified as D3 repairs – filtering out the higher-risk defects from the current S3 (priority 3) defect category. D3 defects will now be repaired within 90 days.
This means that some defects that currently do not have a fixed timeframe for repair will, under the new approach, be repaired within 90 days.
It will be delivered within existing highways maintenance budgets by focusing resources on higher-risk D3 (priority 3) defects that represent risk to public safety and service delivery.
The council will have a continued focus on keeping road users safe, while making the best use of available resources.
The council will continue to inspect, monitor and repair other defects across the network in line with its risk-based approach to highway maintenance.
By tackling these types of defects more quickly, the council aims to improve the overall resilience of the highway network.
Councillor Mark Webster, Essex County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “Residents should know what standard they can expect form us. This new commitment means these defects will have a clear timeframe for repair, rather than remaining without one.
"We have to make the best use of the resources available and prioritise repairs according to risk. This is a practical change that gives residents greater certainty while keeping our focus firmly on road safety."
