Essex County Council launches Walking Strategy 2021 with 22 free coastal route guides showcasing county’s coast

Cllr Peter Schwier, Deputy Cabinet Member to the Leader and Climate Csar, joined Cllr Sue Lissimore, deputy Cabinet Member for Sustainable Travel on the bucket and spade train, to celebrate the launch of the walking strategy, with a little help from young Essex train-users taking the bucket and spade service for a day at the coast.

Essex County Council, working with the Go Jauntly app, has launched 22 coastal walks to celebrate the natural landscapes and picturesque towns along the Essex Coast.

The walks are part of The Essex Path to Prosperity project, an initiative funded by the Coastal Community Fund, Essex County Council and other partners, in order to showcase the 350 miles of habitats, villages and vibrant towns in the county.

All 22 of these walks are available free for all to enjoy on the Go Jauntly app, in collaboration with ECC’s 2021 walking strategy, with each walk being easily accessible via public transport.

The launch event, which took place yesterday morning, combined one of the Go Jauntly walks - Walking the Naze - with the Greater Anglia Bucket and Spade Train.

The bucket and spade train is run in collaboration with the Community Rail Partnership, which raises awareness on how easy and fun it is to take the train to explore new green spaces of Essex on foot, via public transport.

Cllr Peter Schwier, Essex County Council Deputy Cabinet Member to the Leader and Climate Csar, joined Cllr Sue Lissimore, Deputy Cabinet Member for Sustainable Travel, on the bucket and spade train, to celebrate the launch of the walking strategy, with a little help from young Essex train-users taking the bucket and spade service for a day at the coast.

Cllr Sue Lissimore, Essex County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Sustainable Travel, said: “Leisure walking is a good way to start walking, build up fitness and resilience which can then build to walking for day to day travel to school, work or to the shops.

“The ambition of Essex County Council’s Safer, Greener, Healthier transport campaign is to encourage Essex residents to walk, cycle, and use public transport rather than jump in the car, especially for shorter journeys. This improves the environment and helps us achieve our strategic priority to improve the health of people in Essex.”
