East Hill construction update - 29/09/26

Works are progressing on East Hill, with the Octavius team prioritising paving works outside St James' Church to ensure wheelchair access is maintained. Early surfacing works have also been undertaken on the newly constructed cycle path west of the church.

From Monday 28 September, the team will continue moving down East Hill, beyond the Old Auction Room. This will see the relocation of the temporary crossing point from outside Curve Bar to outside Sonali.

Over recent weeks, the focus has been on creating the new kerb lines and, from Monday 5 October, you will start to see an increase in the amount of paving being installed within the works area.

This week will also see works prioritised around the Priory Street exit. Due to an unforeseen underground void, repairs will be undertaken and extended protective barriers have been put in place to maintain safety.

Managing accessibility

During the works, it is very important that we make it as easy as possible for pedestrians to continue using East Hill. As such, the team is working on one side of the road at a time, keeping the northern side clear.

On the southern side of the road, the works are being undertaken in sections to minimise disruption wherever possible.

To ensure safe access for residents, a temporary crossing point is in operation. This is being moved in line with the progression of the works and is equipped with both audible and tactile crossing indicators to support people with visual impairments.
