Temporary speed limit protects workers during installation of safety measures.
New road safety measures are being installed on the A414 to help reduce fatal and serious collisions.
Essex County Council, supported by Essex Police and the Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP), has set up a temporary 40mph limit to protect crews working on the safety upgrade.
The works will result in permanent speed limit changes from Widford roundabout to B181 Tylers Green, including:
To help enforce the speed limits, average speed cameras will be installed along the A414 in early 2026.
Will Cubbin, Partnership Manager at the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, said: “Speed is one of the most significant contributing factors in serious and fatal collisions. Even small reductions in speed can reduce crashes and prevent death and serious injury.
“These changes on the A414 will create a safer environment not only for drivers, but also for pedestrians, cyclists and the highways teams working hard to deliver these improvements.
“As a partnership, we are fully committed to supporting these measures as part of our ambition towards Vision Zero, a future where no one dies or is seriously injured on Essex roads.”
Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport at Essex County Council, said: “We are taking vital steps to reduce the number of fatal and serious collisions on this road by reducing the speed limit and introducing improved speed enforcement.
“It is important that all road users follow the speed limits put in place to protect themselves and others using or working on the highway.
“As partners in the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, we are committed to working together to make the A414 safe for everyone as we work towards our ambitions to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries.”
