Cabinet Members visit as work underway on latest phase of Dovercourt regeneration programme

New improvements begun this week as part of a wider transformation of the area.

Work has started on the latest phase of the Dovercourt regeneration programme, marking another major step in the transformation of the town centre.

This new phase forms part of the wider Dovercourt Capital Regeneration Programme. The programme is designed to revitalise the town, improve public spaces, and create lasting benefits for residents and visitors.

Essex County Council has appointed M Group Highways to deliver the £2.39 million Dovercourt Public Realm Scheme.

Cabinet Members from Essex County Council and Tendring District Council visited the site this week. The visit included the route from the train station, the recently refurbished Harwich Library and the neighbouring Tendring District Council schemes.

The latest works focus on improving the key route between Dovercourt Railway Station and the seafront. It will strengthen connectivity while significantly enhancing the look and feel of the town.

The investment will bring high-quality paving, new planting and upgraded public spaces along the B1414 Kingsway, alongside improvements outside Dovercourt Railway Station and Harwich Library.

These upgrades will create a more attractive, welcoming environment, encouraging people to spend more time in the area and supporting local businesses to thrive.

Alongside this, the Dovercourt High Street Accelerator Green Spaces scheme is well underway. Run by a forum of local partners and supported by Tendring District Council, the project is aimed at improving the link between the seafront and the town centre.

Dovercourt’s regeneration programme has already benefitted the community. The £1.16 million refurbishment of Harwich Library has led to a significant rise in usage. Visitor numbers have tripled since the library reopened.

Further developments led by Tendring District Council include the creation of a new car park in Milton Road and new council homes in Victoria Street.

Councillor Jeff Bray, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Heritage, said: “By investing in high-quality public spaces and better connections through the town, we are helping to create a place that people are proud to live in and that visitors want to return to. These improvements will have a lasting positive impact on the local economy and community."

Councillor Mark Webster, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “The improved route between the station and seafront will not only enhance daily life for residents but also strengthen Dovercourt’s appeal as a welcoming seaside location for visitors. This is an important step in the regeneration of Dovercourt.”

Work on the latest phase of the programme is due to finish this winter.
