Brentwood High Street upgraded as resurfacing works complete

The project saw the replacement of the aging cobbled surface, improving safety for users.

A large-scale project to replace the cobble stones in Brentwood High Street with a harder wearing asphalt surface is now complete.

Crews replaced old granite stones between Crown Street and St Thomas Road with a smooth asphalt surface, making the road safer and easier to use.

Brentwood Borough Council supported the upgrade after concerns grew about the aging cobbled surface, which had become a safety risk.

Switching to asphalt will make future maintenance easier and offer better value for money for residents.

The work was coordinated with Cadent Gas Ltd, which upgraded gas mains along the road at the same time. This helped reduce disruption and improve efficiency.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport, said: “I am delighted to see the completion of the resurfacing works on Brentwood High Street. The surface upgrade will significantly improve safety and accessibility for all road users.

“By coordinating with Cadent Gas and Brentwood Borough Council, we have ensured minimal disruption while delivering long-term benefits for residents, businesses, and visitors.”

Councillor Barry Aspinell, Leader of Brentwood Borough Council, added: “Our residents and high street businesses know how much the resurfacing was needed and, whilst there was disruption, it was good that the gas works and resurfacing works were co-ordinated to try and minimise that disruption.

“Now the works have been completed and the appropriate linage is in place, we will work with our partners in the South Essex Parking Partnership to help reduce the amount of anti-social vehicle parking that happens frequently.”
