Welcome to the Highways Service Information Centre
Following our update in September, the Stone Bridge Replacement Scheme has now recommenced, with the installation of temporary steel sheet piles and the construction of the new bridge foundations currently underway. The new 30m pile foundations and pile capping beams will support the new bridge deck which forms the first phase of the new structure. The river embankments in front of the bridge foundations are currently being shaped using stone-filled gabion baskets and walls of soil bags to protect the new foundations from the river.
The construction of the bridge foundations marks a significant milestone for the project and represents the first major stage of construction following the recommencement of works on site. Completion of this activity will enable the next phase of the scheme involving the installation of the new bridge beams and construction of the bridge deck, bringing the project a step closer to delivering a new bridge that will provide a safe, reliable and resilient crossing for years to come.
We will continue to provide updates as work progresses.
Temporary steel sheet piling is now being installed on site, supporting the ground around the excavation area as work continues on the new Stone Bridge.
