Preliminary drawing of proposed new roundabout

About the scheme

Natta Building Company Ltd, appointed by Mersea Homes and Hills Residential, are constructing a new roundabout at the Fiveways junction in Stanway, Colchester. This forms part of the wider Mersea Homes development at Fiveways Fruit Farm (planning application reference: 182220 and 222548) granted by Colchester City Council.

The project includes extending Laurence Byrne Avenue from Warren Lane to the Fiveways junction, where a new four‑arm roundabout will be built. Planning consent for 420 new homes and the associated access was granted in 2021, followed by approval of the spine road in 2023.

Once complete, the new connection is expected to ease pressure on Blackberry Road by enabling traffic to use the Tollgate relief road, cross Warren Lane, and continue directly to the new roundabout.

Initial works began in December 2025, focusing on the southern approach to the roundabout, including trial hole investigations to support future planning.

Full construction is due to begin on 19 January 2026, subject to final arrangements. This is a major scheme expected to take around a year to complete.

The works will be delivered in phases including:

  • Early enabling works - Began in December 2025 on the southern approaches to the new roundabout. This will allow traffic from Dyers Road and Heath Road to be diverted through the southern section of the layout, easing pressure at the junction. This traffic switch is anticipated by the end of March 2026.
  • Diversion of existing utility supplies, along with construction of parts of the roundabout where possible.
  • Completion of the roundabout construction.

How it will affect you

Main works on the highway are expected to begin on 19 January 2026, subject to all required permissions being in place.

The traffic‑management arrangements are complex and will run through multiple phases, changing work progresses to maximise efficiency and minimise disruption. Measures are expected to include:

  • Four‑way temporary traffic signals to manage flows
  • Temporary road closures, used only when essential for safety or construction needs
  • Advance notice of closures, with signed diversion routes provided

A plan below illustrates a proposed diversion (anticipated for late March 2026). Note that traffic management may be subject to change and drivers are always required to follow local signage in place.

Proposed work phases during main construction Proposed work description and traffic management (note that details may be subject to change)
Phase one - starts 19 January 2026

Diversion of existing utility supplies and partial roundabout construction

During the first three months, there will be various traffic‑light controls on Dyers Road, Heath Road, and Blackberry/Peartree Road while utility diversions take place.

There will be periods when it will be necessary for the junction of Heath Road with Blackberry/Peartree Road to be closed to vehicles, with traffic diverted via Dyers Road. This arrangement will allow further works in the area to proceed with less disruption to residents on Heath Road.

Phase two Full construction of new roundabout

We encourage drivers to plan their journeys and allow extra travelling time.

Please note that dates may change depending on weather or if unforeseen issues arise.
