About the works

Little Braxted Bridge is located on Little Braxted Lane in Witham and carries the carriageway over the River Blackwater.

Essential works are due to take place during summer 2025 to repair the bridge and protect the structure. During this time a physical width restriction of 2 metres (6’-6’’) will be installed to reinforce the existing 3 tonne weight limit.  This will prevent larger vehicles from crossing the carriageway, safeguarding the bridge’s continued use.

Warning signs will be installed at strategic locations in the surrounding area so that drivers have sufficient advance notice of the new 2 metres (6’-6’’) width restriction at the bridge.

In addition, we will be carrying out refurbishment works, including painting the bridge’s steel elements and undertaking concrete and brick repairs.

How it will affect you

Essential works will begin on Monday 21 July and continue to the end of August 2025.  Please note that dates may be subject to change if the programme is affected by unexpected issues or unsuitable weather conditions.

During the repairs and installation of a physical width restriction of 2 metres (6’-6’’), it will be necessary for the road to be fully closed 24 hours a day, until the works are complete.  Drivers will need to following diversions in place during this time. An alternative route is available via Little Braxted Lane, Colemans Bridge, Colchester Road, Newland Street, The Grove, The Grove Roundabout, Maldon Road, Blue Mills Hill, Witham Road, Tiptree Road, Kelvedon Road, and vice versa.
