About the scheme

Plans are being made for works to take place on Hoppit Bridge which carries Notley Road over the River Brain in Braintree. The bridge is located immediately between Notley Road’s junction with Godlings Way and St John’s Avenue.

The bridge deck is currently in a weakened condition and needs replacing. The bridge was constructed in two stages, the original deck on the west side and part of the extended section on the east wide will be removed and rebuilt. The new deck will comprise of pre-stressed concrete beams and a reinforced concrete deck.

The works

These essential works have been arranged to start on Monday 20 September 2021 and are expected to take approximately four months to complete.

Dates may be subject to change in affected by poor weather or if unforeseen issues arise.

What is involved and how it may affect you

Works will initially start on Monday 20 September 2021 with two way traffic lights to prepare the site ready for the main works which are due to begin in October 2021.

From Monday 4 October 2021 a full closure of Notley Road at the bridge (between the junction with Godlings Way and St John’s Avenue) will be required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until the works are complete. Vehicle access to St John’s Avenue will be maintained at all times from the south side of the bridge.

A signed diversion route will be in place during the road closure.

In addition there will be temporary lane restrictions to both sides of the bridge which will be managed by two-way traffic lights.

We urge all drivers to take additional care and observe traffic management and signage in place during the works.

A temporary footbridge will be installed to ensure access is maintained for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists at all times.
