About the Scheme

Cust Hall Bridge is located on Gainsford End Road, Toppesfield, Braintree and carries a two way, single road over a tributary of the River Colne.

An assessment of the structure has found the bridge to be in a weak condition and needs to be replaced.

Arrangements have been made to begin these works in autumn 2020.  This will involve removing the existing bridge and replacing with a wider structure made of precast concrete box sections, which reduces the overall construction period.  The precast box sections will be placed side by side, along with headwalls and wingwalls that comply with national standards.  The road will still carry two-way traffic, over a single road under an informal give way arrangement.

A full closure of the road at Cust Hall Bridge will be required during these works with a temporary footbridge in place to support pedestrian access.

The works

Initially works are planned to begin on Wednesday 16 September 2020 to allow necessary utility diversions to take place.  This will be followed by the installation of a temporary bridge/footway to provide an alternative route for pedestrians.

The works are anticipated to be completed in January 2021, subject to weather being suitable and no unexpected issues arising.

The new bridge will be a precast concrete box structure with brick parapets on either sides. The carriageway over the bridge will be widened to the current standard width of 6m and a 1.4m wide hard verge/footway on the eastern side.

There will be a signed diversion route in place during this work which will use the following roads; B184 Walden Road, Thaxted Road, B1053 Radwinter Road, Walden Road, Radwinter Road, B1053 Walden Road, B1051 and vice versa.

Working hours will be between 7am and 7pm Monday to Friday.

Advance notices will be in place and appropriate diversions signed during closure periods.  We urge all drivers to take additional care during the works, allowing extra time, observing signage and traffic management in place.
