A414 Edinburgh Way/Cambridge Road junction improvement scheme

Progress Update - 02 July 2020: Overnight works and traffic restrictions continue week commencing 6 July 2020

Good progress has been made during overnight works this week with three trench reinstatements completed. During next week the work will progress under the same traffic restrictions.
Overnight closures apply between the hours of 8pm and 6am on the A414 Edinburgh Way in both directions (between Harlow Mill/Cambridge Road Roundabout and River Way Roundabout) with temporary traffic lights also required at Harlow Mill Roundabout.

The work programme for week commencing 6 July includes the installation of a second layer of surfacing and commencing the central reservation infill now the kerbs are complete. Further trench reinstatement works are planned.

We will continue to share updates on the proposed traffic managing phasing via this webpage and @essexhighways as soon as details are confirmed.

There may be traffic delays at certain times and work phases which we aim to minimise as much as possible.  We would encourage motorists to allow extra time and plan journeys during these works.

Visit one.network for further details about these roadworks and others in the area.

Thank you for your continued patience throughout these works.

Road Closure - 26 June 2020: Overnight works planned week commencing 29 June requiring closure of A414 Edinburgh Way & temporary traffic lights at Harlow Mill Roundabout

Edinburgh Way will be fully closed in both directions between Harlow Mill/Cambridge Road Roundabout and River Way Roundabout next week, between the hours of 8pm and 6am. This will allow the contractor to begin the first layer of surfacing on the first 300 metres of the scheme (from River Way Roundabout heading east).  Power cable diversion preparation works will also be completed at the corner of Templefields.

Trench reinstatement works are planned to take place at Harlow Mill Roundabout with the support of temporary traffic lights.  These will be in operation overnight between 8pm and 6am.

Other activities, including the installation of road signs and footpath surfacing on the south side are also planned.

Please be aware that in the coming weeks, traffic management will be subject to change to support overnight surfacing works and other activities as we bring this scheme to completion. Please continue to follow this webpage for the latest updates on traffic management phasing, as information becomes available.

Thank you for your continued patience throughout these works.

About the scheme

Essex County Council is developing a series of improvements in Harlow and funding has been secured to improve the A414 Edinburgh Way/Cambridge Road Roundabout.

Main works include:
  • Dual carriageway for Edinburgh Way between Cambridge Road and River Way Roundabouts.
  • Upgrade of the A414 Cambridge Road Roundabout.
  • Improve traffic signals at the East Road junction with Edinburgh Way, maintaining a crossing point on the A414 for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • With the exception of East Road, vehicles that access premises on Edinburgh Way will be prohibited from turning right due to the new central reservation.  Vehicles at the East Road junction will be able to turn in both directions at the traffic signals on completion of works.

  • Expected completion of main works - 15 July 2020
