Sturmer Station Bridge is a two-span brick arch structure which carries the single carriageway B1061 Water Lane over Stour Brook. Footways are not provided over the structure.
No restrictions are currently in place on the bridge however the road carries a speed limit of 30mph.
The Environment Agency classify the brook as a Main River, which has been subject to flooding at various locations in the past.
In 2018 a study was commissioned to carry out a bridge option study and flood investigation works which we anticipate will be complete during the 2020/21 financial year.
We are currently considering measures to improve the river flow at this location, reducing the potential risk of flooding at the bridge.
Part of this study involves an assessment of the structure and to consider options available to replace Sturmer Station Bridge to safeguard the bridge crossing for the future. Please refer to our site investigations information below for works planned during November 2020.
We anticipate the bridge option and flood investigation study will be completed in the 2020/21 financial year, and lead to a number of engineering options being available for further consideration. Once an option has been agreed, and subject to the necessary funding being available, Essex Highways will move into a design phase which will be followed by a period of work planning before physical works can begin. The length of this process can vary from scheme to scheme and can be influenced by a number of other factors so we are currently unable to provide confirmation when works will start on the structure.
We will work closely with the Environment Agency and other stakeholders throughout this process to progress this work, and provide updates on this webpage.
In the meantime we consider the bridge safe for its current use and have no plans to impose restrictions at this time. The bridge will continue to be part of our routine inspection programme.
To support the Option Study in progress and future design proposals for a replacement bridge over the River Stour tributary, structural and ground work investigations are required. These began at the end of November 2020, and ground work investigations are scheduled to continue at Sturmer Station Bridge from Monday 16 August 2021 to conclude the works previously started.
These activities are anticipated to take approximately one week to complete with the support of a full closure of Sturmer Station Bridge.
Advance warning notices will be in place along with appropriate diversions during the closure of Water Lane, which will be symbolised to make the route clearer to road users.
Vehicular access to all properties and businesses will be maintained throughout via the signed diversion route. Pedestrian access will be unaffected.
We are sorry for any temporary inconvenience caused by these works and would advise drivers to take extra care travelling in the area.
Please note that dates may be subject to change if the works are affected by poor weather, or if unexpected issues arise.
The latest information will be shared on this webpage, via our @essexhighways twitter feed and with local parish councils.
