About the scheme

Essex Highways is proposing to replace the existing bridge in Roxwell with a new structure that will be the first Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) deck bridge in Essex. This will be the first vehicle bridge in Essex to feature an GFRP deck.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the start of these works has been postponed. The scheme will now commence on 26 October 2026 and is expected to take approximately 20 weeks to complete, including a planned two-week break over the December holiday period.

The advanced GFRP technology is a lightweight but exceptionally strong material that offers significant benefits over traditional steel construction. Manufactured in Poland and imported specifically for this scheme, the GFRP deck provides a durable, corrosion-resistant solution that is designed to last longer and require less maintenance throughout its lifespan.

By investing in this innovative technology, the scheme will deliver a more resilient crossing while reducing future maintenance costs and minimising disruption associated with ongoing repairs.

How the work will affect you

To enable the works to be carried out safely, both the pedestrian and vehicle bridges will be closed throughout the construction period. While the vehicle bridge is used primarily by local agricultural traffic, Essex Highways recognises the importance of the route to the local community, particularly given its proximity to the nearby primary school.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption during the works. Safe pedestrian routes will be maintained where possible and temporary parking arrangements will be provided nearby to assist parents, while diversion routes will be available for buses and emergency vehicles.

The diversion route will operate via Skreens Park Road, Dukes Lane, School Lane, Dunmow Road, the A1060, Salta Green and Vicarage Road, and vice versa.

Bus stops in The Street, southeast of the bridge, will be temporarily closed, with a temporary stop provided at the junction of Skreens Park Road, Boyton Cross Lane and Stonehill Road.

There will be a shuttle service in place for service users.

We appreciate these works may cause some inconvenience and ask road users to allow extra time for their journeys. Please note that dates may change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
