Marks Tey Bridge, North Lane, Marks Tey

Road Closure - 17 May 2019: Marks Tey Bridge - One Day closure 17 May 2019

A defect has been identified in the carriageway following recent resurfacing works on North Lane at Marks Tey Bridge which needs to be corrected as soon as possible.  Remedial works will be carried out today, Friday 17 May 2019 between the hours of 9am and 4pm, afterwhich time all traffic management will be removed, including temporary traffic lights enabling the road to be fully opened to vehicles.

We apologise for any inconvenience this temporary closure will cause.

About the scheme

Marks Tey Bridge is located to the north of Marks Tey town and carries North Lane over Roman River linking Aldham to Marks Tey.

The bridge currently has a 3 tonne weight limit with all HGV’s diverted through an alternative route. In addition to the weight limit, the bridge has been struck a number of times causing damage to the structure.

Plans have now been made to replace the bridge with a wider structure. The main construction of the bridge will be precast concrete box culverts that will be brought to site and lifted into place, bringing benefits of a shorter construction programme when compared to other methods.

Following reconstruction of the bridge, the intention is to lift the weight restriction, subject to the consultation process.

The works

Bridge replacement works began 19 November 2018.  We anticipate the road will be reopened at the end of April 2019, subject to suitable weather conditions and no unexpected issues being experienced.

What is involved and how may it affect you

It will be necessary for North Lane to be fully closed to vehicles during the works from a point approximately 990m south of its junction with Rectory Road for a distance of approximately 75m in a southerly direction.

The diversion route for the diverted traffic will be via North Lane, Station Road, A120, Colne Road, Coggeshall Road, Upper Holt Road, Lower Holt Street, Colneford Hill, Colchester Road, Tyburn Hill, Colchester Road, Halstead Road, Ford Street, New Road, Green Lane, Brook Road and vice versa.

A temporary footway will be installed to allow pedestrians during the bridge reconstructions works.

Programmed dates may change if works are hindered by adverse weather and or other unexpected issues.
