Marks Tey Bridge, North Lane, Marks Tey

Latest News - 29 November 2018: Marks Tey Bridge

Much work has taken place to prepare the site for construction in the last two weeks.  A site compound has been established and cutting/clearing of vegetation has been undertaken.  This is to clear the areas needed for the installation of the temporary footway, diversion of BT cables and to carry out the construction works.

We are continuing to monitor and adjust the traffic diversion signs to encourage all drivers to observe road closure warnings early, thus avoiding them an unnecessary trip to the closure point and potential inconvenience to local residents.  No through traffic is permitted through the works.   Our efforts are however being hindered by fact that 16 diversion signs have gone missing from the route over a number of nights – this is being investigated by our contractor who will look to rectify the situation, however would ask that any suspicious activity is reported to the Police on 101.  In the meantime we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

About the scheme

Marks Tey Bridge is located to the north of Marks Tey town and carries North Lane over Roman River linking Aldham to Marks Tey.

The bridge currently has a 3 tonne weight limit with all HGV’s diverted through an alternative route. In addition to the weight limit, the bridge has been struck a number of times causing damage to the structure.

Plans have now been made to replace the bridge with a wider structure. The main construction of the bridge will be precast concrete box culverts that will be brought to site and lifted into place, bringing benefits of a shorter construction programme when compared to other methods.

Following reconstruction of the bridge, the intention is to lift the weight restriction, subject to the consultation process.

The works

Bridge replacement works are due to commence from 19 November 2018 and are expected to take approximately 4 months to complete, dependant on weather.

What is involved and how may it affect you

It will be necessary for North Lane to be fully closed to vehicles during the works from a point approximately 990m south of its junction with Rectory Road for a distance of approximately 75m in a southerly direction.

The diversion route for the diverted traffic will be via North Lane, Station Road, A120, Colne Road, Coggeshall Road, Upper Holt Road, Lower Holt Street, Colneford Hill, Colchester Road, Tyburn Hill, Colchester Road, Halstead Road, Ford Street, New Road, Green Lane, Brook Road and vice versa.

A temporary footway will be installed to allow pedestrians during the bridge reconstructions works.

Programmed dates may change if works are hindered by adverse weather and or other unexpected issues.
