About the scheme

Preparations are being made to renew the traffic signals at the junction B184 George Street, High Street, Saffron Walden.

The works

Works are due to start on Monday 4 January 2021 and expected to take approximately 7 weeks to complete. Working hours will be Monday to Friday between 7:30am to 4:30pm and Saturdays 8am to 1pm.

We will be replacing the traffic signals at the junction before they become unreliable and fail to work properly and will be installing new extra low voltage equipment, which will help reduce our carbon footprint.

What is involved and how it may affect you

Initially there will be a one week closure on a section of the High Street to allow new ducting and poles to be installed. The closure will be during working hours only and the road will be fully re-open after each shift.

After the ducting is installed, the road closure on High Street will be lifted and a section of George Street will be closed for the remainder of the works. George Street will be closed 24 hours a day to all vehicles for the remainder of the works.

It will also be necessary to close Abbey Lane for a maximum of five days during the second week of the works. The closure will be during working hours only and the road will fully re-open after each shift.

During the road closure on George Street the one-way system on gold Street will be reversed to ensure access is maintained.

These road closures are necessary in order to carry out the works in a safe manner as well as significantly reducing the time taken to complete the installation.
