About the scheme
Cadent are carrying out gas infrastructure upgrades on the A13 during the school summer holidays in 2026.
We have been working closely with Cadent to ensure that, once their works are complete, Essex Highways can undertake carriageway resurfacing activities as efficiently as possible. By aligning these works we can minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and road users.
The resurfacing works will involve removing all or part of the existing road surface (known as planing) and transporting the material off site. Following this, drainage gullies and manholes within the work area will be adjusted or replaced where necessary before the new road surface is laid.

How it may affect you
Cadent – gas works
Cadent started works on the A13, London Road gas main upgrade project on 29 June 2026 with the support of a 24 hour road closure required 24 hours a day at the Tarpots Corner Junction.
These works were expected to continue until mid-August 2026, however due to good progress made and amendments to the programme, Cadent currently anticipate that the 24 hour road closure will be removed from 12am on Tuesday 4 August 2026, restoring full access for all road users.
Lane restrictions will remain on High Road, Benfleet while Cadent continue activities between Rileys and Tesco Express, however 2-way traffic flow will continue on High Road until these works are completed (planned 15 August 2026).

Essex Highways - overnight resurfacing
Essex Highways' resurfacing works will begin shortly after Cadent completes its upgrades, with works scheduled to take place between Friday 14 August to 22 August 2026. During this time the A13 will be closed at the Tarpots junction in both directions overnight, between 8.15pm and 5am.
The road will reopen each morning to allow normal traffic movements during the day.
Diversion routes will be in place throughout the overnight closure period.
Please allow additional time for journeys and follow signed diversion routes where applicable.

Please be aware that activities are likely to generate noise from machinery and resurfacing equipment. Some disruption will be unavoidable during the improvement works, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
