About the scheme

Road surface improvements are planned to take place on Market Hill and Fullbridge in Maldon during June 2020.

These works have been combined with waterproofing the bridge deck, which carries the road over the River Chelmer, to help preserve the life of the bridge.

Traffic flows are still generally lower than normal at the moment due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and we have been able to fast track our plans and combine works to utilise this quieter time to minimise inconvenience to residents and work efficiently.

The works are anticipated to take two weeks to complete.

The majority of which will be carried out overnight with the support of overnight road closures, although a full closure of the bridge will be required for two days, to support bridge waterproofing activities as the waterproofing process can only be done traffic-free.

What is involved and how this may it affect you

Surfacing improvements are scheduled to begin on Monday 8 June 2020 with work being carried out in phases between Market Hill (where it meets the High Street) and Fullbridge/Station Road roundabout (near Tesco/Lidl stores).

The majority of the works will take place overnight Monday to Friday, with the support of temporary road closures with the road reopening during the daytime. However, when waterproofing the bridge deck, currently planned overnight on Wednesday 9 June through to 5am Saturday 13 June, it will be necessary to close the road, with no vehicles permitted to pass over the bridge.

A limited number of closures on Maldon High Street will be required.

During the works there will be occasions when a temporary road surface will be in place. Drivers are advised to pay particular attention to sign onsite and to allow extra travelling time for journeys in the area. When roads are closed, no access will be possible to through traffic due to the nature of the activities being carried out.

A formal diversion (suitable to all vehicles) will be signposted during road closures. Visit one.network for details.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Proposed traffic management restrictions are outlined below however please be aware that the work programme may be subject to change if affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise. The latest updates will be reflected on site signage and this webpage.
