E-scooter trials in Essex

Important information

Shared e-scooters are a key component of Essex County Council’s Safer, Greener, Healthier campaign and are part of the UK’s nationwide e-scooter trials. This service is exclusively available to adults (18+) who possess a valid full or provisional driving licence and have registered with the e-scooter provider via their app. This ensures they are covered by insurance, similar to car insurance.

Important safety information:

  • Not for children: e-scooters are not toys and should not be used by children.
  • Account holder only: only the registered account holder is permitted to ride the e-scooter. If someone else rides it, the e-scooter will be uninsured.
  • Safety first: never allow family or friends to use your account to ride the e-scooter. This is crucial for everyone’s safety.
  • Legal consequences: both the rider and the account holder could face a £300 fine and 6 points on their driving licence if the e-scooter is used by someone other than the account holder.

By following these guidelines, we can ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience for all users.

Changes to Essex’s e-scooter trial

New provider to be announced for shared e-scooter scheme in Essex soon.

The current contract for the provision of shared e-scooters in Essex will conclude on Wednesday 13 August 2025, as Essex County Council prepares to transition to the next phase of the service.

Since launching in 2020, the scheme has supported over 3 million journeys across Braintree, Chelmsford and Colchester, helping residents travel more sustainably and providing choice.

The council would like to thank Dott, the current operator (previously operating as Spin and then Tier), for its contribution over the past five years.

Removal of the e-scooters began today (Monday 11 August) ahead of the contract end date. Users with active passes beyond Wednesday 13 August are advised to contact support@ridedott.com to arrange a refund.

Unfortunately, the expiry of Dott's contract and unexpected delays in tendering a new contract means e-scooters will temporarily be unavailable for hire in Essex.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport, said: “We’re proud of the role shared e-scooters have played in helping thousands of residents make more sustainable travel choices across Essex.

“As we move into the next phase of the service, we remain committed to expanding sustainable transport options and look forward to announcing a new provider soon.”

Dott continues to operate in Milton Keynes, Nottingham and Bristol.
