About the works

As part of the planning permissions for the extension of Broomfield Hospital, Mid Essex Hospitals Trust were obliged to make improvements to the roundabout at the junction of B1008 Main Road and Hospital Approach to improve capacity. All approaches will be widened to two lanes with a revised and relocated central island.

How it will affect you 

The work will be carried out in phases with proposed traffic restrictions as outlined below:

Phase 1:

Completion due by end December 2021

  • Widening of the northbound approach to the roundabout. 
  • The footway on the western side of Main Road will be closed with appropriate pedestrian signing however vehicular traffic will not be restricted.

Phase 2:

Completed

  • Removal of splitter islands and roundabout central island. 
  • Vehicular traffic will not be restricted.

Phase 3:

Completed

  • Widening on Eastern side of Main Road. 
  • Vehicular traffic will not be restricted however pedestrians will be signed to avoid the works.

Phase 4 (a)

Completed

  • Works to eastern side of Main Road (north of the roundabout) and north side of Hospital Approach.
  • Vehicular traffic will not be restricted however pedestrians will be signed to avoid the works.

Phase 4 (b)

24 January 2022 to 11 February 2022 

  • Works to roundabout central island and southern splitter island. 
  • No right turn into Hospital Approach, traffic will be diverted via Court Road (refer to Documents section for diversion route).
  • Traffic heading north and south will not be restricted, traffic leaving Hospital Approach will not be restricted.

Phase 5

Dates to be advised

  • Works to splitter islands.

Phase 6

Dates to be advised

  • Surfacing of northbound side of carriageway. 
  • Closure of Hospital Approach with diversion via Court Road (refer to Documents section for diversion route).

Traffic management will be reviewed and adjusted where necessary according to the works being undertaken and dates may be subject to change if the works are affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise.

Drivers are recommended to allow additional time when passing through the area and observe all signage in place.
