Victoria Road Bridge, Victoria Road (A1099), Chelmsford

About the scheme

Victoria Road Bridge carries Victoria Road (A1099) over the River Chelmer in Chelmsford, Essex. The bridge comprises of two structures, the first being the original concrete Hennebique Bridge built in 1924, and a second concrete bridge was added in 1957 when the river channel was widened.

An 18 tonne structural weight limit was introduced by Essex Highways in 2017 to protect the structure from further weakening.

Plans are now in place to undertake concrete repairs to the deteriorated elements of the bridge

The works

Proposed concrete repair works will commence on 17 September 2018 and are due for completion by the end of December 2018.

What is involved and how it may affect you

Concrete repairs will be carried out from underneath the bridge with the use of floating pontoons as a working platform. This method will allow Victoria Road to remain open during the works.   The current weight limit of 18 tonne on Victoria Road over the bridge will remain in place.

Repairs will carried out in four stages to reduce the impact on the river flow.

In order to safeguard the public from the works, one footway on the bridge will be closed to pedestrians at a time with arrangements in place to allow safe crossing of the road.

The footpath and cycle path along the River Chelmer/ Riverside Retail Park will remain unaffected by these works.

Please note that programmed dates may be subject to change, for example if the works are affected by unsuitable weather or if unforeseen issues arise.
