Maldon - Market Hill / Fullbridge carriageway improvements

Progress Update - 18 June 2020: Fullbridge/Station Rd Roundabout surfacing works planned overnight Sunday 21 June

View of overnight road closure - Market Hill, Maldon

Our onsite team have experienced a slight delay to surfacing works at Fullbridge/Station Road roundabout (by Tesco/Lidl) this week, contributed by poor weather overnight on Wednesday 17 June which prevented works from going ahead as planned.

Arrangements have now been made to reconvene surfacing of the roundabout overnight on Sunday 21 June between the hours of 7pm and 5am.  The road closure of Market Hill to Fullbridge/A414/The Causeway roundabout will be needed, with access to residential properties accessible via High Street/Market Hill.

The final phase of works, which involves the installation of high friction surfacing at Fullbridge is expected to follow Monday 22 June overnight, 8pm to 5am, under a road closure of Market Hill and Fullbridge Road.

Full details about these works are outlined in the main text below.  Please note that dates may be subject to change at short notice if affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise.  The latest information will be reflected on site signage.

Thank you for your patience while we carry out these improvements. Please be assured that pedestrian routes remain open for use throughout.

Progress Update - 15 June 2020: Fullbridge waterproofing works complete with road surfacing works ongoing

Bridge waterproofing works were successfully carried out last week with the bridge reopening on schedule Saturday 13 June.  Road surface improvements will continue as planned overnight this week with the support of road closures.

The final phase of works, which involves the installation of high friction surfacing at Fullbridge, is scheduled overnight for Monday 22 June between the hours of 8pm and 5am, under a road closure of Market Hill and Fullbridge Road.

Pedestrian routes remain open for use.

For full closure details please refer to the table outlined in the main text below.

About the scheme

Road surface improvements are planned to take place on Market Hill and Fullbridge in Maldon during June 2020.

These works have been combined with waterproofing the bridge deck, which carries the road over the River Chelmer, to help preserve the life of the bridge.

Traffic flows are still generally lower than normal at the moment due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and we have been able to fast track our plans and combine works to utilise this quieter time to minimise inconvenience to residents and work efficiently.

The works are anticipated to take two weeks to complete.

The majority of which will be carried out overnight with the support of overnight road closures, although a full closure of the bridge will be required for two days, to support bridge waterproofing activities as the waterproofing process can only be done traffic-free.

What is involved and how this may it affect you

Surfacing improvements are scheduled to begin on Monday 8 June 2020 with work being carried out in phases between Market Hill (where it meets the High Street) and Fullbridge/Station Road roundabout (near Tesco/Lidl stores).

The majority of the works will take place overnight Monday to Friday, with the support of temporary road closures with the road reopening during the daytime. However, when waterproofing the bridge deck, currently planned overnight on Wednesday 9 June through to 5am Saturday 13 June, it will be necessary to close the road, with no vehicles permitted to pass over the bridge.

A limited number of closures on Maldon High Street will be required.

During the works there will be occasions when a temporary road surface will be in place. Drivers are advised to pay particular attention to sign onsite and to allow extra travelling time for journeys in the area. When roads are closed, no access will be possible to through traffic due to the nature of the activities being carried out.

A formal diversion (suitable to all vehicles) will be signposted during road closures. Visit one.network for details.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
