About the scheme
Essex County Council has secured £15 million to undertake sustainable transport improvements to help alleviate pressure on Chelmsford’s road network.
Following a public consultation on the Chelmsford City Growth Package during summer 2017, the decision was taken to progress plans to improve the existing cycle network at Chelmer Village Way, a key route around Chelmer Village.
The route runs from the roundabout at Cuton Hall Lane and New Dukes Way to the roundabout at the A138 Chelmer Road via a series of roundabouts that provide access to residential and retail areas as well as a number of schools.
The majority of the length is by the existing cycle network via a series of shared segregated or shared unsegregated footway/cycleways, however there are some sections that are currently not benefitting from this facility.
This scheme closes one of these gaps by linking the existing network just to the west of Howard Drive to the segregated footway/cycleway that ends at the entrance to Brook End Gardens to the north of Hollis Lock.
The works will include the widening of the existing 2 metre wide footway into the adjacent verge to create a 3 metre wide shared facility.
There will also be works to the bus stop to the north of Village Gate (the entrance to Asda car park), improvements to the crossings at all of the side roads within the extents of the works, a new crossing point at the northern end of the scheme, minor changes to the street lighting and improvements to the signage.
When will the work take place and how may it affect you?
The works are due to start at the end of June 2018 and are anticipated to continue through to the end of August 2018.
The majority of the works will be completed during the day time (between the hours of 9am and 7pm) during the working week with some Saturday morning working (between 9am and 1pm).
Sections of the footway will be temporarily closed during the works, with signed diversion routes through the surrounding estate roads. Temporary bus stops will be provided while works to these locations are carried out.
Throughout the various phases, traffic management will be necessary and temporary lane restrictions will be in place.
Please note that advertised dates may be subject to change for example if affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise.
Updates will be available via this webpage including changes to the work programme, details regarding traffic arrangements such as temporary closures as well as local signage.
