A414 Chelmsford to Harlow route improvements

About the scheme

The A414 is a key east-west route in the county, providing connections with Chelmsford, Harlow and beyond.

A number of improvements have been identified for the A414, designed to increase safety, highway capacity and encourage the use of sustainable transport along this route to support the future growth and regeneration.

The works are valued at around £4.3 million and are being jointly funded by Essex County Council and South East Local Enterprise Partnership through the Local Government Fund.

Proposals include

Four Wantz Roundabout (Ongar) layout improvements:

  • Layout improvements to increase three of the roundabout approaches to two lanes (Epping Road, High Street and Chelmsford Road).
  • Upgrading the existing zebra crossing to signal controlled toucan crossing on Epping Road approach to the roundabout.
  • Associated changes to the adjacent footways and convert an existing footway section connecting High Street (southern) and Fyfield Road (northern) to a combined footway and cycleway.

Widford Roundabout (Chelmsford) improvements:

  • Introduce an additional traffic lane on the western approach of the Widford roundabout.
  • Widen the northern verge of the western arm, redesign and relocate approach signs, amend road markings, lighting as necessary.

Bus and safety scheme improvements:

At various locations upgrade bus stop facilities, footway connections, signage, road markings and consistency of traffic islands.

Southern Way widening:

Investigate opportunities to widen the A414 between Southern Way and Second Avenue (Clock Tower Roundabout), Harlow.

Please refer to the overall scheme plan included in the document section below.

When will the work take place and how may it affect you?

At present planned start dates are unknown, however as soon as details are confirmed they will be available via this webpage.

Throughout the various phases, temporary carriageway restrictions, including overnight closures will be required where necessary.  Appropriate notices will be displayed on site and updates will be reflected on this webpage as the programme progresses.

Residents directly affected by the works will be contacted separately.

While efforts will be made to keep traffic congestion to a minimum throughout these improvements, it is recognised that works will be undertaken in traffic sensitive areas and there is likely to be some disruption to normal traffic flows.

Further information

A plan of the route improvements is available in the document section below.

We aim to keep residents informed of progress by providing updates to this webpage including details regarding traffic arrangements such as temporary closures, displaying local signage and updating our twitter feed @essexhighways.
