About the scheme

Essex Highways are making preparations to replace signage and install cameras on a stretch of the A127 in Basildon to support the introduction of a new 50mph speed limit, including average speed cameras.  This is being introduced to improve air quality and road safety in the area.

Roadside tests have shown that the stretch or road exceeds national air quality safe limits for nitrogen dioxide.

By lowering the speed limit it is expected that air quality on this stretch of the A127 can be brought to safe levels by 2021, as well as improving road safety and journey time reliability.  Vehicles’ engines work more efficiently at about 50mph and lowering speeds from 70mph to 50mph can reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions from car exhausts by up to 20 per cent.

The works

Work started on Monday 27 January 2020 to replacement signs and average cameras are being installed on a stretch of the A127 between the Fortune of War roundabout and east of the Pound Lane / Cranfield Park Road junctions. The works are being carried over overnight between the hours of 9pm and 5am and are expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

Temporary overnight lane restrictions are necessary on this section of the A127 throughout the works, reducing traffic to one lane.  This includes junction approaches for the safety of the workforce and the public.

The latest information about traffic management changes during the works, including dates of planned overnight road closures, will be advertised in advance via this webpage and the @essexhighways twitter feed.  Warning notices will also be on site in advance of the works.

Temporary road restrictions will be lifted during the day time to minimise inconvenience and disruption to road users.

We appreciate that this is a traffic sensitive site and are sorry for any inconvenience caused to residents, businesses and the travelling public during these works.

Speed limit change - effective from 27 January 2020

A reduced speed limit of 50mph speed limit is now in force affecting both carriageways between the existing 40mph speed limit near the Fortune of War roundabout and approximately 470m east of the Pound Lane (westbound)/Cranfield Park Road (eastbound) junctions.
