Jaywick improvement works

Jaywick roads and drainage improvement programme

In early 2015 Essex County Council announced a £5m investment over two years to improve existing poor drainage and road conditions in significant parts of Jaywick and bring genuine benefit to Jaywick residents.

This work followed concerns expressed through consultation with the local community.

The improvement works started in July 2015 and were planned as a two-year programme. The principal contractor managing the works was Essex Highways, the strategic partnership between Essex County Council and Ringway Jacobs. Ringway Jacobs engaged John Henry Group to undertake the construction.

The programme included new road surfaces outside residents’ homes in a number of areas (see map below), as well as clearing, improving and piping the main drainage ditch, to help reduce the risk of flooding in the streets.

The works have been carried out across a two year plan, working in a way to minimise congestion wherever possible as most of the roads are narrow cul-de-sacs. Each street was individually assessed for the specific treatment to be given, due to the variability of the ground conditions in the area, however a uniform ‘look’ has been used everywhere possible. The works progressed steadily, subject only to weather conditions and the particular technical challenges each road presented.

The programme largely completed by July 2017, with a final suspension during the period of the Summer school holidays to minimise disruption during peak season. Remaining works will be completed between September and November 2017.

Ribbon cutting event

On 25 July 2017 the Chairman of Essex County Council, Councillor J Aldridge, plus other senior politicians, officers and representatives from Essex County Council, Tendring District Council, Jaywick Community Forum and the highways engineering teams visited the site to cut a ribbon, chat with residents and declare the programme complete.

Jaywick Sands residents now benefit from improved street drainage which is helping to alleviate large puddles and flooding, as well as improved roadways that look better and are safer and easier to pass along.

We expect that residents will naturally have some questions regarding what will happen to their roads during the works, so we have compiled a list of what we expect will be the most frequently asked questions. You may download a copy of the FAQs below.
