Progress Update - 14 November 2017: Courtaulds Culvert
Following the excavation and demolition of the culvert section during October, the focus for November is reconstruction. Works are progressing from the upstream end towards the flats to the south west, fixing reinforcement for the base of the river walls and new culvert section.
There have been some delays to the work programme and additional works which have impacted the anticipated completion date. We will continue to keep you informed as work progresses and are currently working towards reopening Bovingdon Road to vehicles early 2018. Works may be subject to delays if hampered by poor weather or unexpected issues.
We regret any inconvenience caused while we undertake these essential works.
About the scheme
Courtaulds Culvert located under Bovingdon Road, Bocking near Braintree was placed under an emergency closure on 9 September 2016 after inspectors found the structure to be suffering from serious deterioration. The road was closed to vehicles to safeguard the public.
Preparation works started summer 2017 ready for the demolition and reconstruction of the culvert section that falls within the highway boundary.
The reconstructed works will consist of reinforced concrete,
spanning the same footprint as the existing. New culvert parapets with
approach safety fencing will also be installed on the finished structure.
There are a number of utility supplies (gas, water, electricity) that run through the structure. Highway engineers are in liaison with the necessary third party contacts to organise the diversion of supplies that will be required during the works.
Preparatory works began in August 2017 to create a site compound and temporary parking facility, followed by the diversion of services by third party utility companies.
Excavation and demolition works were undertaken in October and engineers are currently focused on reconstruction works ready for the new culvert section.
Some unforeseen delays and additional works have been necessary which have affected the work programme. We are working towards re-opening Bovingdon Road early 2018, however this may be subject to change if works are hampered by poor weather or unexpected issues.
We appreciate highway works can be disruptive and would like to thank you for your continued patience while we undertake these works.
