A series of improvements are planned for the A127 / A132 Nevendon Interchange, financed by Government’s Local Growth Fund via South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP).
The scheme is designed to manage congestion at the Nevendon roundabout and improve A127 journey times and access to Basildon and Wickford via the A132 Nevendon Interchange.
Nevendon roundabout improvements:
What will this involve?
- Widening of the Nevendon roundabout from two to three lanes
- Introduction of a new left turn lane under traffic signal controlled for vehicles travelling from the west on the A127 Southend Arterial Road to the A132 northbound to Wickford
- Upgrade to traffic signals.
The pedestrian crossing located on East Mayne, just south of the Christopher Martin Road junction will remain in operation throughout the work.
Please view the roundabout improvement drawing which can be found in the Document section of this webpage.
Work started on 26 April 2016 and we anticipate completion Winter 2016, weather permitting.
Advance notice - lane closures on A132 Nevendon Junction for essential bridge works:
Monday 30 January - Friday 3 February 2017
the works at Nevendon Interchange, we identified that the bridge foundation
required repair. Following completion of the Nevendon works, we are
taking the opportunity to carry out the repair work following on immediately so
that any disruption is contained within the same period as the improvement
order to facilitate works planned underneath the bridge, it will be necessary
for the inner ring of the Nevendon roundabout to be closed during the day time
week commencing Monday 30 January.
Further lane reductions will apply overnight each evening between the hours of 8.30pm and 5am where traffic will be reduced to one lane on the roundabout and on all slip road entrances. This is to allow space for the equipment which will be used to repair the foundation.
Traffic managment will be in place from day time off peak Monday 30 January and we expect the roundabout to be fully reopened Saturday 4 February following the overnight restrictions.
There will be further lane closures in February for final waterproofing once the concrete repair has cured, this will be advertised nearer the time.
Thank you for your continued patience.
Proposals for Christopher Martin Road:
Proposals to reduce congestion northbound on the A132 East Mayne by introducing a one-way route westbound on Christopher Martin Road has now been fully investigated and a decision has been made not to pursue this option.
Traffic surveys and CCTV monitoring results support this decision and provide evidence that alternative measures may provide greater benefit to drivers. Investigations are now being made into improving signage and lane markings on East Mayne approach and introducing a yellow box junction.
How will this affect you?
For the duration of the works, Christopher Martin Road will be closed to vehicles in both directions from the junction with A132 East Mayne for a length of approximately 269ft / 82m to provide safe access for construction traffic. Access to businesses on Christopher Martin Road will be via Paycocke Road or Cranes Farm Road.
While efforts will be made to keep the road network flowing as efficiently as possible, road users can expect delays caused by temporary road layouts. Motorists should consider taking alternative routes where possible, or allow additional time for journeys.
Where temporary road closures are necessary, diversions will be in place and advertised in advance via local signage and www.roadworks.org
Updates will be posted on the website as construction progresses.
