A176 Nether Mayne Improvement Scheme, Basildon

Essex County Council was successful in obtaining funding from the government’s Local Pinch Point Fund. Bids were submitted for highway schemes that would address local traffic pinch points and assist in the release of economic and housing growth.

About this scheme

The A176 Nether Mayne in Basildon experiences congestion in the morning and evening peak periods. The corridor between Basildon Hospital and the Roundacre Roundabout carries in excess of 25,000 vehicles per day.

Modelling work has shown that the A176 Nether Mayne link from the A13 to the Roundacre Roundabout is currently operating over capacity in the peak periods.  This causes congestion for traffic travelling into Basildon Town Centre and other parts of the town including Basildon Hospital especially in the northbound direction, from A13 to Roundacre Roundabout.

This corridor also forms part of the southern access to the Basildon Enterprise Corridor along the A127 which is the largest business area in the Thames Gateway outside London, where 45,000 people work in over 5,000 businesses.

What is involved and how may it affect you?

Works began in September 2014 on this £3.4m scheme which aims to reduce congestion and increase accessibility along the A176. It will also improve access to Basildon Hospital as well as the town centre, supporting plans to create 5,000 jobs.

These aims will be achieved by adding an extra traffic lane for vehicles travelling between the hospital roundabout to the junction with Ashdon Way, and two lanes in both directions under the railway bridge up to the junction with Roundacre Roundabout.

In addition, the existing signalised junction at Ashdon Way will be upgraded.

The benefits of the scheme include reduced journey times and improved access to Basildon Hospital so ambulances going to the hospital can pass general traffic.

The crossing near the school entrance will be moved south towards the hospital roundabout so that the road can be widened and to provide a larger waiting area in the centre of the road for pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme is supported by Basildon Borough Council.

While every effort will be made to minimise the impact of the works on traffic flow and journey times, delays should be expected. There are no plans to close the road. Traffic management and advanced warning signs will be in place, advising road users of the works.

Access to the hospital for ambulances and visitors will be maintained. Drivers should allow extra time for their journey and use other routes where possible.

When will it be finished?

Work is currently scheduled to be completed during Summer 2015.

What other works will be taking place?

Essex County Council has been working with Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on a further scheme financed by the hospital that will take place during summer 2014. The Trust is installing a set of traffic signals at the Basildon Hospital Roundabout to help traffic exit the site.

Latest update (24 July 2015) - widening of the access road to Basildon Hospital
